The Sitter: Film Review
This story appears in the Dec. 16 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Earvin "Magic"Johnson, now 52, won five NBA titles when he played for the 1980s "Showtime" Lakers; his Magic Johnson Enterprises, which once included a theater chain, was estimated by Forbes in 2009 to be worth $500 million; and as of Dec. 2, he was part of a bid to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers. But he threw up a brick when he entered the late-night talk show business with 1998's The Magic Hour, two years after ending his 13-year playing career. The Hollywood Reporter review said the syndicated Twentieth Television show was "absent the spark of spontaneity and sharp conversation." While Magic Hour started strong and even briefly topped CBS' Late Show With David Letterman in the NY ratings, success was fleeting. Critics said Johnson seemed stiff on-air, was prone to mumbling and had poor interviewing skills. His sidekick, comic Craig Shoemaker, was fired for calling the show "an absolute nightmare." But Magic Hour did have one high point when its most high-profile critic, Howard Stern, was invited as a guest. The shock jock began by asking, "Where's the white guy, the comedian?" (Johnson's response: "We weren't clicking"), then gave the novice host interviewing advice ("Loosen up and talk Ebonics all you want. Why does everyone have to understand every word you say?") and asked detailed questions about Johnson's sex life before becoming HIV-positive in 1991. Although the Stern appearance doubled the show's ratings, it was off the air after three months. Johnson then focused on deals with Burger King, PepsiCo, Ron Burkle and others that financially freed him from ever having to host a talk show again. Related Topics Howard Stern Earvin Magic Johnson

The X Factor: Came Discusses Her Questionable Exit
Came Ryniewicz Last night's double elimination around the X Factor was filled using more than the typical drama. After Astro was removed, Came Ryniewicz - who cried throughout the majority of the show - and Marcus Canty sang in order to save their spots within the competition. The resulting votes by idol judges L.A. Reid, Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul to transmit Came home noticeably angered 4th judge and Drew's mentor, Simon Cowell. After accusing themself for his poor song choice the evening before (he stated he earned an error selecting a too-slow rendition of "Billie Jean") and pleading Nicole and Paula to provide her another change, Simon became a member of a tearful Came onstage and declined to comment to some clearly flustered host Steve Johnson.Came, 15, spoken to reporters about her emotional elimination, getting Simon like a mentor, her plans for future years which song choice. - Sydney BucksbaumDo you accept Simon that the elimination was his fault due to the song he chose for you personally?Came: I do not think that it's all regulated Simon's fault. He did want me to perform a slow song and that he greatly enforced me to make use of the chair (by which she sitting throughout the whole performance). But overall, I still had the general decision and that i did not fight for precisely what I should have. How did getting Simon as the mentor influence your performances?Came: I do not believe Simon pressed me to complete anything. Both of us believed that slow music might happen again and again, and lastly after i did not agree any longer it had been past too far, you realize? I acquired removed. How can you experience another judges' votes to transmit you home?Came: I seem like the idol judges maybe had an adequate amount of seeing me doing slow tunes plus they did not think it had been worth a go with Simon. Simon apologized plus they understood it wasn't me. They explained, they stated I understand that last performance most likely wasn't your decision. I simply believe that they wanted Simon to understand that you simply can't just let someone do one factor. Because I'd a lot more will be able to show and Simon recognizes that. What's this complete experience been like for you personally?Came: This really is unbelievable. It had been so surreal because I started work with Simon Cowell and come on buddy-buddy. It feels wonderful now, since I am searching back in internet marketing. It feels as though totally an aspiration. What exactly are your plans for future years?Came: I'm so excited to create my first album. That's likely to be like my first child.
